It was a delight to have the opportunity to listen to a podcast of Chapter One of the 2001 book, Prayer at Rumayla by Charles Sheehan-Miles. It has been a long time since I read a book, but a podcast is just perfect for my busy life.
Prayer at Rumayla is about a 19-year-old Gulf war veteran returning to America after a year in the Gulf, engaged in ground battle and the things he encountered in Iraq, the things that shaped his mind and the things he discovered upon his return.
Chapter One is approximately 24 minutes in length but it is full of emotions that made me sit at the edge of my seat. Although it is fiction, I know that many people who have been to war can identify with the character and people with family who went to war, some returned injured not only physically but mentally as well, some not so lucky and never made it back, can relate to Prayer at Rumayla as a whole.
This is a very compelling story that everyone should listen in to, or read the book. It gives us an insight to the trauma that one experience in war, and afterwards. I am looking forward to more podcasts of this novel and hope to find out how the ending will turn out for Chet Brown.
