If you have been following my blog, you would remember that I used to correspond with many pen pals, some of them from Ukraine, Russia, Romania and Uzbekistan. Even though these boy and girls filled me in on their culture and tradition, we hardly touched on History or the background of these countries.
However, one thing that stuck to my mine is the great Soviet Union peasant death from hunger during the famine over fifty years ago, known as Golodomor. Time passed and I did not take the initiative to check up for further details of Golodomor, until a couple of days ago when I was introduced to this website, holodomor Truth, which unveils the truth about Golodomor, the mass hunger that caused the deaths of six to eight million peasants between 1932 to 1933.
History is never a strong point but what made me interested to read up on Golodomor and Holodomor Truth is the fact that my pen pals are from there, and even though I have never met them before, after so many years, they are like my real friends. So you can imagine my shock to learn that in Ukraine alone, approximately 1.3 million people died during this unfortunate episode.
Some quarters are saying that this Golodomor is actually genocide but the European Parliament ruled against it. Whatever it was, everyone should have a right to live.
