The countdown to install rear seat belts in family vehicles have started. I don't feel like this is necessary at all or that it will solve the problem of high accident rate in the country. If one is a reckless driver, one is jeopardizing the lives of passengers and other road users, whether they are using rear seat belts or not.
I feel that forcing us to install rear set belts just burdens car owners, especially owners of old cars that do not already come with rear seat belts and are not covered by free fitting of rear seat belts. This new law reminds me of the time we were forced to install the third brake light where car accessory shops were charging an exorbitant price for it because of the sudden surge in demand for third brake lights.
The laughable thing is that in today's news report, it was said that there is still no decision made on the third passenger in the rear of a normal saloon car and drivers are advised NOT to carry a fourth passenger because there's no rear seat belt for the back passenger in the middle.
HELLO? What is the purpose of a five-seater family car, then? Is the person supposed to ride in a bus or taxi to go where the family is going? What about cars that carry four adults and two young children?
Well, I don't know. I'd probably just install rear seat belts at the last minute when clearer guidelines have been drawn.

You're joking right? It's actually proven that rear seatbelts can actually save lives, especially the ones that go across your chest. The middle seat across-the-waist seatbelt actually does more damage cause you slam into your legs after a head on collision.
Many countries have already made it mandatory to wear (let alone install) backseat passenger seatbelts with the severe fines equal to if the driver doesn't wear seatbelts themselves.
I'm all for it. Took me a while to get used to, but I hardly notice it at all these days.
A friend of mine was thrown out from the front of the car from the backseat and landed herself in the fast lane of a highway. It could have been avoided if she put on her rear seat belts.
And you are right on reckless driving. The root cause of these. I guess both have to be in place for less accidents / injuries on the road.
Have a great week ahead.
hiya babe! i hv to agree with kamigoroshi. rear seatbelts should not be considered as a burden cos it saves lives. nevertheless, i did try to put it on yesterday... needs a lil' bit of getting used with it... kinda 'suffocating'... :-)
