Today, 2nd November, is All Souls' Day, a day that the family gets together and offer prayers and food to my late grandmother. 1st November was All Saints’ Day but we never celebrate that because we are not Roman Catholics. Even though my grandmother converted to Roman Catholic many, many years ago, we still offer her the same on Qing Ming as we offer to our ancestors.
Anyway, since today is Sunday, the cemetery was packed. One thing caught my eye, though. There was this man who was there with his mother and they offered three boxes of long white candles (just that) to the father; the woman's late husband.
The man was using the umbrella for shade while the woman was squatting down lighting candles. And this guy put up his foot ON the grave, as if it was a "step". I found that absolutely ill-mannered to step on his father's grave!
The mother did not say anything but just lighted the candles, and the son used his foot to point at things on the ground or moved the candles around for his mother. I really felt like speaking up but the man is already in his 60s. Doesn’t he have any sense at all?
