Euthanasia

A friend, whose dog lived till 17 years of age, told me that in retrospect, it has been selfish of his family to hold on to the dog and let nature takes its course for the dog to die.

He told me that the final year of the dog's life was very painful for the dog as well as family members. The dog lost his eyesight and hearing, as well as strength to even walk. Yet, they decided not to opt for euthanasia and waited for the dog to time up by itself.

As a Buddhist myself, I am against euthanasia but now that Snoopy is at this point in life, though his condition is not as bad as that of my friend's dog in his final year, I dread to think that I may have to opt for this should Snoopy deteriorate so much that there's no longer any quality in life and he is just wasting away.

I hate it when friends tell me to put first, Dino and now, Snoopy, to sleep. This is definitely not the time to tell me that. I hope that in time, I never will have to take such an option. It must be the most painful decision for a pet owner to make.
