When my sister first moved to the United States, one thing she was not used to was not the weather or food but the insecurity she felt as most homes do not have a fence and their mailboxes are placed at the curbside. In our own home, our mailbox is seals into the pillar and it has a lock so our letters are very secure.
However, once my sister realized that NOBODY will disturb her mail, she started to appreciate the unique designs of curbside mailboxes, especially those hand-crafted ones. When she moved to a new home, she even spent a long time contemplating which mailbox to buy! It's like an important part of her house and something that would stand out at the side of the street and which people coming into the street would be able to identify her house with!
Although curbside mailboxes are not popular where I live, I understand that people who are living in gated communities are also starting to adopt the use of curbside mailboxes. I think it's great and it saves the mailman lots of walking too!
