In a post not too long ago, I wrote about my cousin, Jasmine, who wanted to build a conservatory. She told me that when she told her friends about it, a debate arose as to which will increase the value of a home. Is it the conservatory or the loft conversion?
Since Malaysians may not be familiar with these two terms, let me just loosely say that a conservatory is like a sun-room that is built on part of the compound taking up space, either independently or as an extension from the main house while the loft conversion is like an attic that is built just under the roof. In Malaysia, many houses have a loft conversion but are used mainly as storage space.
Personally, I like conservatories better and I envision that this will bring value to a home in future. Right now, many people are still sceptical because it is still quite expensive to build a conservatory BUT as the population as a whole is able to live longer but not necessarily healthier, a loft conversion will no longer be practical to serve older homeowners.
Besides, with a sun-room that is an extension of the house, we can better entertain our guests there without disrupting the family whereas to go to the loft conversion, people would have to enter the main house to access to it. Of course, some people build it in such a way that they could go from the side or back of the house but that is certainly not practical at all.
Having said this, if I have the budget, I would surely go for both because I do see the benefits of both! But I believe that building either a conservatory or a loft conversion would require approval from the local council as there are building by-laws to be met!
