Before my friend, Paul, moved to New York City from Penang, he sold his home. He engaged the services of an international mover who helped him with the long distance moving but there were some personal belongings that he did not wish to take along yet, until he has found a home to settle down to.
He found a local company that offered him self storage and he was comfortable with their service enough to keep his belongings with them for a few months. He was very happy with the arrangement because he didn't want to bother his friends and family since he didn't know how long it will take.
Eventually, he rented a nice bachelor pad in New York City and had the rest of his belongings sent over to him.
